10 Blog Ideas for Board Game Creators

10 Blog Ideas for Board Game Creators

Are you a board game creator? Not sure what to write about on your blog? Maybe you’ve hit a bit of writer’s block. Here’s 10 ideas to get you started.

1. New game launch

This is the most obvious, so I thought I’d mention it first. If you’re bringing out a new game, your blog is the perfect place to let people know – and hype them up about it. Let people know when it’s coming out and what they can expect. What kind of game is it? Do you have some photos to tease them? Are you running a crowd funding campaign? If so, let people know how and when they can support you.

2. What’s in the pipeline?

Have you got some exciting news or projects coming up? Let people know about it.

Maybe you’re bringing out a new game or expansion. Or maybe you’re working on an exciting project with another company. Maybe your game is being used in a tournament. Is your stuff being launched in a new shop? Upcoming Kickstarter? Write about it. Whatever is going on, your customers are bound to find it interesting.

3. Behind the design process

People love a peek behind the scenes. Talk about how you came up with the design of your game, sharing the journey from initial concept to final production. Share sketches, prototypes, and the development of the game mechanics.

4. Playtesting adventures

Write about how you playtested your game, focusing on any memorable playtesting moments. Did players play any unexpected strategies? What feedback did you get and how did it shape the final game? Sharing this will show people how you engage with your community and shows a commitment to quality.

5. A deep dive into the game components

How and why did you choose the components in your game? This is also a chance to give people another little peek behind the scenes. You can write about things like material, quality, artwork, and how the components enhance the gameplay experience. Talk about the different options you considered and why you made the choices you did.

6. How you came up with the storyline

Does your game have an interesting storyline? Write about the creative process behind it. How did you come up with the idea? How does it influence the game play? Are there any bits you left out? Why?

If your game is part of a complex world, can you, or someone else, write stories that will add a further dimension to your game? If you can, they could make interesting blog posts.

7. Event write-up

Have you been to any industry events such as big game conventions like the UK Games Expo or Spiel Essen? The fans who visited you will be interested in seeing what happened and the ones who couldn’t make it will love to see what you got up to.

Include details about the show, photos of you in action and your game setups on the day. People will be excited to see your games and may decide to visit you next time, or at the least be gently reminded that they wanted to buy your game.

8. Collaborations and interviews

Worked with anyone cool recently? Write about your collaboration. This will help promote both parties and people always love it when their favourite creators work together. Whatever you’ve been up to, tell your fans about it.

9. Game design tips for beginners

Position yourself as an industry expert while providing valuable help to aspiring game designers. Share tips and insights into board game design including topics such as balancing mechanics, creating engaging player interaction, and avoiding common design pitfalls. Or even how to run a successful crowd funded campaign.

10. Board game industry trends or news

What’s going on in the board game industry and what’s trending? From popular themes or mechanics to growth (or decline) in board game sales, write about your take on what’s going on. How have you been affected? How do you think the industry will develop in the future and how does it influence your own decisions?
